Chris Hemsworth plays a prison inmate with certain “skills” who is called upon to track down a terrorist hacker in a new trailer for the movie “Blackhat.” The movie, however, has been eclipsed somewhat by Sony’s server breach.

In a somewhat prophetic statement, his character, Nicholas says “this is all just a game, a virtual world.”

Hollywood has been stung this year by hacking scandals. First, anonymous hackers cracked the codes on more than 100 celebrity cell phones, uncovering hundreds of mostly nude photos and videos.

Then, Sony was hit by a hack of massive proportions. A group that identifies itself as “Guardians of Peace,” spilled the guts of the film company’s servers containing emails, documents, salary schedules and even entire films like Brad Pitt’s “Fury.”

Many of the emails have proved embarrassing for high-ranking Sony execs, including Co-Chairman Amy Pascal. Actors have been spoken of in disparaging terms and even President Obama was the subject of off-color banter about his film choices.

It will be hard for “Blackhat” to top that. The name, incidentally, refers to practices that are used to defeat Internet security and other safeguards.

The action thriller mystery, directed, produced and co-written by Michael Mann, focuses on a joint effort by American and Chinese agents to track down a rogue terrorist hacker.

Hemsworth’s character is a seasoned criminal hacker who is released from prison to aid in the search under the proviso that it takes a hacker to catch a hacker.

Viola Davis, William Mapother and Wei Tang co-star in the film, which is due for release Jan. 16.
