Liam, 24, started dating Cyrus in June 2009 while they filmed her movie, “The Last Song.”
At the time, Miley was still recognized for her good-girl Disney Hannah Montana image. He stuck with her as she morphed into a sexually charged pop star, but she unceremoniously dumped him and started playing the field.
Liam reportedly took the break up pretty hard, although his family, including Chris, thought it was the best thing for the young actor. In the latest interview, Chris said almost as much.
“I’ve watched Liam do things I did at his age, like being in relationships he shouldn’t be in, or being reckless just to prove a point. And I had no empathy. My mom had to remind me I was the same way,” he told GQ Magazine.
The Hemsworths grew up in Melbourne, Australia and Chris got his acting start in an Australian soap opera. Breaking in was a tough time for him.
“Back when I was still on the soap, I became incredibly insecure and full of anxiety because I didn’t know if I was any good. Yet, I wanted it so bad. I spent years being angsty, constantly telling people I wasn’t just part of a soap opera, that I was a real artist. And I remember [older brother] Luke sort of snapping, telling me to shut up, that he was sick of hearing it.”
The 31-year-old actor got his big breakout in American films as Thor in the Marvel Studios films “Thor” in 2011. He’s reprised the role in two other films and will appear in a third Marvel film in 2015.
He also appeared in “Star Trek” (2009), “A Perfect Getaway” (2009), “The Cabin in the Woods” (2012) and starred with Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” (2012). He’ll reprise his role in a sequel, although Stewart has been dropped from the film.
Chris left his wild days behind in Australia.
“The fame, the parties, the women — I did that stuff back home, when I was on [the Aussie soap opera ‘Home and Away’].” He adds, “I got away with a lot more over there. Then I came here and sort of started over,” he says.
He married Spanish actress Elsa Pataky in Dec. 2010 and they now have three children. “We did it all backwards — agreed to get married before I actually proposed,” he says Hemsworth.
He has two other films coming out in 2015. He’ll star in “Blackhat,” playing an expert hacker who tracks down a terrorist, and “In the Heart of the Sea,” a movie about shipwrecked sailors.
He’s also scheduled to appear in a comedy, a remake of “Vacation,” which will mark a much needed departure from his tough-guy roles, he says.
“I haven’t been that nervous in a long time. But very quickly I realized, this is fun. There was no ego. Every day we’d be on set, laughing. I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me? Why wouldn’t I do more of this?'” he says.
