Matthew McConaughey went with a feral, rough-hewn look while filming his latest car commercials for Lincoln, but he could have done everyone a favor by taking a shower first.

McConaughey, who is known for extreme method acting, looks like he hasn’t showered in weeks in the new commercials, and a source tells IM he smelled like it too.

The smell was noticeable to everyone but him. It permeated the car’s interior and lingered after shooting was done. Afterward, the cars went back to the dealer. It’s unknown whether they were detailed to get rid of the stink.

Going without showers for long periods of time has become an “in” thing in Hollywood. Many actors, from Robert Pattinson, Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe to Mickey Rourke, are body hygiene challenged.

Pattinson once told a UK tabloid that he doesn’t wash or change his clothes until “it gets to the point where even I can’t stand the air around me.”

Brad Pitt reportedly is so averse to showers “Inglourious Basterds” co-star Eli Roth gave him a tip: wipe down with baby wipes to cut the B.O.

Matthew once revealed he hasn’t worn deodorant in 20 years.

In 2008 his “Fool’s Gold” co-star, Kate Hudson, said she begged him to wear some and even offered him her own. But Matthew refused.

“Women love my natural scent. I smell like a man. I smell like me,” he said.

Oddly, McConaughey’s looked belied the commercial’s message:

“It’s not about huggin’ trees. It’s not about bein’ wasteful, either. You just got to find that balance, for takin’ care of yourself takes care of more than… just yourself. That’s the sweet spot.”

The latest Lincoln commercials are scheduled to debut on New Year’s Day and will air during college football games.

His first round of commercials for the car brand, released earlier this year were widely parodied on the Internet and late night television.
