You’d think artists would be a little circumspect about supporting one team while performing a song that represents everyone.
But apparently they don’t give it much thought when someone shoves a jersey at them.
Ariana Grande also raised some hackles when she wore a Seattle Seahawks jersey during her performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the NFL opening day game between the Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers.
Packers fans vented their disappointment known on Twitter, and some Cardinals fan did the same. Needless to say, Carolina fans were delighted.
“Panthers have Brian McKnight singing the anthem. No way they’re losing today,” wrote one Carolina fan.
“Panthers definitely winning now with Brian McKnight’s blessing,” tweeted another fan.
“Brian McKnight did the national anthem? Why did the Cardinals even get off the bus. Stop the fight,” wrote another.
If there was any consensus on the performance, it’s that McKnight sang a stellar rendition of the song that brought some players to tears.
Over the years, he’s become a staple on the sporting events circuit.
He sang the “National Anthem” for the 1997 NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland, Ohio, Game 6 of the 2002 World Series in Anaheim, California and the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Detroit.
In 2011, he sang the “National Anthem” on Baseball’s Opening Day in Cincinnati with his sons Brian, Jr. and Niko. And, in Oct. 2012, he sang “God Bless America” in Game 7 of the National League Champion Series in San Francisco.
