Justin Bieber started trying to resurrect his career today (Jan. 29) with an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show. He followed up with a humbling apology on Facebook and said he’s “not the person he was pretending to be.”

Bieber, 20, has been involved in a string of altercations, run-ins with the police and generally loutish behavior over the past 18 months.

Over that time, he’s become one of the most polarizing, widely despised figures in pop music. Yet he still maintains a formidable fan base, although he hasn’t made an album in more than two years.

Whether he can regain the charm and popularity he had as a teen sensation remains to be seen.

Ironically, Ellen introduced Justin to the nation on her show when he was just a 15-year-old, known mainly for his popular YouTube videos. She noted the fact on her show today and show a picture from his appearance.

He’s grown considerably since then, added a dozen or more tattoos and must now make the difficult transition to an adult performer. That will require shedding the baggage he’s acquired during the past year and a half. And, it’s ample.

He was arrested in Canada last September for dangerous driving, scuffled with photographers in Paris and got into an altercation with actor Orlando Bloom in Ibiza, all with a span of 30 days.

Bieber pleaded guilty in July to misdemeanor vandalism for throwing eggs at a neighbor’s house and terrorizing their child.

Around the same time, he also pleaded guilty in Florida to misdemeanor careless driving and resisting arrest charges.

But on Ellen and in his YouTube video, he apologized for his behavior.

Explaining his appearance on Ellen, Justin said he was really nervous.

I think I was nervous because… I was afraid of what people are thinking about me right now. It’s been a minute since I’ve been on a public appearance and I didn’t want to come off arrogant or conceded, or basically how I’ve been acting in the past year, year and a half. I’m not who I was pretending to be. Why I say pretending is often we pretend to be something we’re not as a cover up of what we’re truly feeling inside.”

Bieber will be roasted in an upcoming special on Comedy Central on March 7th, something he asked for.

“I think it’s cool to laugh at yourself — I’ve done some things that might not have been the greatest,” Bieber told Ellen. “I just want to be able to laugh about it, and just kind of own up to some of these things.”
