Bobbi Kristina Brown has been placed in a medically induced coma for swelling of the brain, a procedure that suggests she is in far more serious condition than previously reported, and likely close to death.

Brown, 21, came close to drowning, which can cause swelling of the brain and neurological damage, according to medical references.

About 20 percent of near-drowning victims sustain neurological damage; it’s the No. 1 cause when near-drowning victims cannot be revived after rescue, according to medical references.

It’s unknown at the moment how long Brown was submerged in water. According to reports, she was face-down in the tub and not breathing when she was discovered by her husband Nick Gordon and a friend at around 10:30 a.m.

They provided CPR until police and medical technicians arrived at their suburban Atlanta home. She was rushed to North Fulton Hospital where her breathing was re-established. She is being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Whitney Houston Daughter May Have Elaborately Staged Suicide Attempt

This afternoon, sources close to the family told TMZ that Bobbi Kristina had been placed in a medically induced coma to stem swelling of the brain. That suggests that she is no longer breathing on her own and is probably on a life-support system.

Comedian Joan Rivers was also placed in a medically induced coma after she suffered cardiac arrest during a routine medical procedure in New York City. She never regained consciousness.

Although doctors have yet to make an official statement on her condition, the fact that Brown is in a medically induced coma suggests that her prognosis is not good.

It is often a treatment of last resort, according to medical references, for patients who have suffered an “extreme trauma” and are unresponsive to other treatments.

Just going two minutes without oxygen can cause damage to specific parts of the brain. Four minutes without air, causes brain cells to be lost permanently.

When lack of blood flow to the brain lasts longer than 10 minutes most patients do not regain consciousness, according to medical references.

Not all induced comas end in death, however. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was placed in a induced coma after she was shot in the head, and has made a substantial recovery from her wound.
