Miley Cyrus was more country than pop when she sang Paul Simon’s classic “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” on the “Saturday Night Live” 40th Anniversary show last night, drawing both praise and scorn on social media. NBC said she destroyed it. In a good way?

Cyrus is a controversial and somewhat polarizing singer, who veered sharply from her country and Hannah Montana roots in her transition to an adult pop star.

She’s pushed the envelope on her sexuality and toyed with nudity, many times topless or near topless, in videos, paparazzi shots and during her Bangerz Tour.

But last night she was more subdued in a white suit with an embroidered bolero jacket that gaped open. She was clearly braless underneath but that’s as far as it went. She didn’t reveal anything.

Instead, the focus was on her soulful rendition of the Simon song. As she sang her country twang was evident. Miley was clearly showing respect for the music and the evening.

But critics on social media were less than respectful of her.

“Really?!” You could have had virtually anyone in music perform live and you chose Miley Cyrus?” wrote one observer on Twitter.

“lol nice try using destroyed as the adjective! Nice irony!” wrote another.

“Destroyed it in the bad way,” wrote yet another.

But there were just as many tweets praising her performance and the general consensus was she killed it. (In a good way)

Cast member Fred Armisen could be seen in the background banging a tambourine and singing along on the chorus, along with the band and most of the studio audience.

Cyrus was a worthy choice to sing the song. She’s both hosted and performed on the show. Still, it might have been more coolly ironic to see Taylor Swift sing it, given her dating habits.
