The Sesame Street Workshop, producer of the kinder, gentler puppet show for kids, is also capable of wicked satire. It’s released a video that’s rapidly going viral, lampooning the Oscar-nominated movie “Birdman.” It stars… who else? Big Bird.

The gentle giant is joined in the video by Caroll Spinney, who has voiced Big Bird on television for almost 50 years.

The clip is a take-off of a scene widely featured from “Birdman,” in which star Michael Keaton has an existential conversation with his alter-ego superhero character.

Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, aka “Birdman,” a washed-up actor who was once a big movie star playing the character in blockbuster movies. So much so, that he became typecast, causing his career to fade with his character.

Cut to the present day, and Thomas is trying to revive his career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway play. But he’s tormented by the inner voice of his old character.

The Sesame Street parody, titled “Big Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue Of Orange Pants),” features Spinney in his dressing room being haunted by the voice of his famed puppet.

“How did we get here? How did we get to Sesame Street?” Big Bird intones, as Kinney flees his dressing room and runs into the street just like “Birdman’s” Thomson.

In an introduction to the clip the puppet workshop writes:

“For your Oscar consideration: A veteran puppeteer, who plays an avian icon, battles his ego and attempts to find his way back to a certain furry and friendly street. This is ‘Big Birdman.'”

Oscars: What’s the Message in This Year’s Best Picture Nominations?

Sesame Street is hardly known for biting satire, but hey, this is Big Bird they’re messing with.

Spinney plays himself and voices Big Bird. Matt Vogel is in the Big Bird suit. Geri Cole an Joe Jennes wrote the script and Joey Mazzarino directed.

Check it out below, let us know your thoughts and be sure to tune into the Oscars this Sunday. No word on whether Big Bird will be there to accept his award for best Oscar movie parody.
