The races are tight and nearly unpredictable as The 87th Academy Awards gets underway tonight (Feb. 22) from Hollywood. It may prove to be the most watch ceremony in Oscars history the quality of the nominees is so high.

With films like “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and “Theory of Everything,” in hot contention for Best Picture anything can happen.

“Boyhood,” “Selma,” and “Whiplash,” are also hot contenders for top film honors.

In the Best Actor category, Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper, Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbach and Eddie Redmayne guarantee that someone will win an award for the first time in their career.

The Best Actress category is equally competitive. Dark horse European actresses Marion Cotillard, Rosemond Pike and Felicity Jones will be competing against Canadian Julianne Moore and American Reese Witherspoon.

The show will kick off on Sunday (Feb. 22) with live coverage from the red carpet. Celebrities will be out to make their best impressions in the latest designer gowns. And, watch out for those pesky wardrobe malfunctions. Seems like the happen every year.

ABC will be televising the Oscars this year and will open its coverage with its pre-show, “Oscars Opening Ceremony: Live From the Red Carpet.” Lara Spencer, Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan and Jess Cagle .
