The video surfaced Sunday night (Mar. 8) after a campus group called OU Unheard posted it on Twitter.
The video looked like it was shot on the sly on a bus load of frat members and their girlfriends. It shows one white youth in a bow tie enthusiastically leading the group in the vile chant.
“There’ll never be a nig*er in SAE,” the group shouts repeatedly, along with a reference to lynching. SAE is the acronym for the fraternity.
To his credit, university President David Boren moved quickly to respond to the incident. “If the video is indeed of OU students, this behavior will not be tolerated and is contrary to all of our values,” he wrote on twitter.
The fraternity’s national organization also took quick action. It announced in a statement just hours after the video appeared that the SAE chapter had been closed.
“SAE is a diverse organization, and we have zero tolerance for racism or any bad behavior,” Brad Cohen, the fraternity’s national president, said in a statement. The organization said those members involved could be permanently barred.
OU Unheard, is a group representing minorities on campus. It said the video was filmed Saturday (Mar. 7) while frat members were taking the bus to a “date party,” according to the Tulsa World newspaper.
