President Obama may be our national leader, but on social media, he’s just like any other celebrity. He gets his fair share, maybe more than his fair share, of mean Tweets, and last night he read a few on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

Obama may be the first social media savvy president in the nation’s history. He handled the spot like a pro.

He read the Tweets with just the right tone and self-deprecation and even agreed with a few. But, honestly, were these really the meanest Tweets the show could find?

While they were definitely sharp edged, the Tweets were softballs compared to what’s been said about the president by far right pundits. There was nothing about his birthplace or his supposed Muslim background. Although, his golf game took a few shots.

“Believe it or not, people talk a lot of crap about the President on Twitter, so it was only fitting that he get his own edition of ‘Mean Tweets,'” Kimmel said, setting up the bit.

The show was the first time the president has done “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and the TV host assured viewers and his audience that none of his jokes or questions were pre-screened by The White House.

But Kimmel acknowledged that he purposely decided to steer clear of politics; well, not totally.

He gave the President a chance to address the turmoil in Ferguson where two police offers were shot on Wednesday (Mar. 13) during a new round of protests over police treatment of minorities.

Otherwise, it was mostly frivolity.

Kimmel nailed the president with this zinger: “Can you run down to the kitchen in your underpants if you’re hungry in the middle of the night?”

Answer: The president said he could… but doesn’t.
