Justin Bieber says he’s really a “genuine person” and all that other stuff he did to earn the title of world’s biggest douche bag was just because he let fame go to his head and was trying to “fit in.”

Bieber continued his “Apology Tour,” perhaps the most important of his career, on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” today (Mar. 18)

Selena Gomez Scorched at Justin Bieber Comedy Central Roast

Ellen has been generous in giving Bieber time on her show to address the public and his fans. He’s been trying to clean up his loutish image and erase 18 months of bad behavior that turned him from teen idol into a polarizing figure.

As part of the effort, Bieber pushed to be roasted on Comedy Central and finally got his day in front of comedians last week. It wasn’t pretty and his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez suffered a lot of collateral damage from the pointed jokes.

“What a birthday present, right?” he told DeGeneres, who asked him to explain his comments at the end of the show. “I read what you said, and it was really sweet.”

“I was just talking about it being a new chapter for me, and basically saying that I’m sorry for the stuff that I’ve done,” he explained.

“I’m not searching for people’s approval. But I just want people to know that’s not me, and I was doing stuff that wasn’t me,” he said.

He blamed his behavior on the fact that he’s been in the spotlight since he was 12-years-old.

“A lot of times we pretend so that we can fit in, and then we end up looking like douche bags, and that was kinda me. It went to my head, and I had to let people pull me down for me to see the truth and see how much of a jerk I was being.”

So will the real Justin Bieber please stand up? Now, he said, he’s “just a genuine person who has fun, and I just wasn’t trying to be a jerk.”
