Ziegler caused an uproar on social media when she performed a highly sexualized dance with 28-year-old actor Shia LaBouf.
She wore a blonde wig and a nude colored bodysuit in Australian singer Sia’s “Elastic Heart” video. LaBouf wore nude colored shorts. They performed a lyrical cage fight that included moments of passion, tender embraces and wild dancing.
Although Sia said the video was supposed to represent the inner struggles of one person, it caused an uproar because of its pedophilia overtones. She later apologized to those who were offended.
But the video and another for Sia’s song “Chandelier,” catapulted Ziegler from an obscure reality star on the show “Dance Moms,” into the national limelight. She followed up the controversy by appearing on “Saturday Night Live.”
Her photo spread in Schön! is her first in Europe. Ziegler “plays dress up in a theatrical wardrobe of Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dior,” according to the magazine.
In some photos, she’s looks like a 17th century harlequin; in others she looks like a courtesan. But, good news, she keeps her clothes on. The photos also play off her dance background.
In Europe, pre-teen and young-teen models are more prevalent and accepted in fashion and often appear in highly sexualized editorials.
Ziegler, who was born in Pittsburgh, began dancing at 2-years-old, and was performing on stage at the age of 5, according to her bio. She joined the Abby Lee Dance Company in 2004.
Lifetime created a docu-series about the dance company and later expanded it to a realty series. It entered its 5th season this year, amid controversy over instructor Abby Lee Miller’s harsh treatment of her dancers.
The show has also been criticized for over-sexualizing the mostly pre-teen and young teen dancers.
