Jamie Foxx drew a strong rebuke on social media over his joke about Bruce Jenner’s pending sex change during his opening monologue at the iHeart Radio Awards last night (Mar. 29), in another sign that adult humor may be an endangered species.

Foxx’s remark was blasted for being “transphobic,” which means someone who is antagonistic toward transsexuality and transsexual or transgender people.

Whether the definition fits Foxx is a stretch. But the outcry on social media is disturbing nonetheless.

Sites like Twitter and Instagram have become sounding boards for online critics who have become so ubiquitous they’re starting to overwhelm social commentary with political correctness.

Foxx also peppered his opening monologue with jokes that played off cocaine use and troubled hip-hop mogul Suge Knight, who’s facing a murder charge. But lacking a constituency, those jibes produced barely a ripple on social media.

Foxx apparently set viewers on edge when he brought up Jenner’s sex change. The former Olympian is in the process of becoming a woman, which may be televised on a new reality show. Doesn’t that make it fair game?

So here’s what Foxx said: “We’ve got some groundbreaking performances here, too, tonight. Bruce Jenner will be here doing some musical performances — he’s doing a his-and-her duet all by himself.”

Nervous laughter was clearly audible after he told the joke. But the reaction was the same when he told a joke about Knight.

“Suge Knight will not be here tonight,” he said. “As you know, Suge Knight started Death Row Records, he found the Dogg Pound, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg. Now here he needs a seeing-eye dog.”

“This is what’s crazy; usually you go out in a big gun battle. He got shot in LA, walked away. Got shot in Miami, walked away. Bail money, he passed the hell out. I ain’t seen Suge duck down like that since he was in the car with Tupac.”

The reference was to Knight’s recent court appearance on murder charges. He passed out after the judged set bail at $25 million. The second reference was to the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in a drive-by shooting.

Foxx tried to lighten the moment by professing, “Look, I’m just busting your balls while I still can.”

But his balls are getting busted today.
