Paris Hilton has been many things since she became famous for being famous at 16. But is she really the one who helped “inspire” Kim Kardashian? She says as much in a new interview, taking credit for launching the reality star.
Hilton, an heir to the Hilton Hotels fortune, certainly has one claim to her credit.
She ushered in the era of “celebutantes,” who are “famous-for-being-famous” by reason of their inherited wealth, family connections and outrageous behavior.
She rose to national attention after Vanity Fair, in 2000, profiled her and sister Nicky Hilton as infamous club-hopping, over-privileged, under-age teens.
Paris grew up in New York and Hollywood and dropped out of high school after bouncing around several exclusive schools, including one for troubled youths.
She began a decade long run as one of the most talked, and written about, people on earth. Finally, several publications banned covering her meaningless antics.
She parlayed her name and fame into an abortive singing career, television commercials, personal appearances and fashion.
In one sense, she did blaze a trail for Kardashian. She was the first to release a sex tape in 2003 and star in her own reality television show.
Now 34 and thinking about having children, Hilton firmly believes the “Kardashians would not exist today” without her.
“It’s nice to inspire people,’ she said in an interview with Yahoo Style. “We’ve known each other since we were little girls, we’ve always been friends.
“So yeah, I’m really proud of her and what she’s done.”
