Kristen Wiig takes the plunge into full nudity in her upcoming movie “Welcome to Me,” a comedy co-starring James Marsden, Linda Cardellini and Wes Bentley. She talks about the experience in a new interview in Violet Grey.

Wiig, 41, is best known for her role on sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live,” and in movies like “Bridesmaids,” and “The Skeleton Twins.”

But her latest film is her most daring yet. She plays a woman with a borderline personality disorder, who wins the lottery and spends the money producing a talk show. She explores the humor and pathos in the lives of her guests.

In one scene, she’s filmed walking through a casino stark naked and covered in blood. She had to go full frontal for the role, but has no regrets about it.

“Being naked in a film or on stage isn’t always supposed to be sexy,” the actress told Tim Robbins, who interviewed her. “It was the part and it felt right, so I did it,” she said.

“Of course you’re nervous, and you know people are gonna make comments. But if you care about that, your job instantly becomes more difficult,” she added. “You have to do things for you.”

Wiig is certainly good at her craft. Maybe too good. She said she gets frustrated sometimes because she can’t escape her comedic background. People expect, and think she is funny all the time, even when she isn’t.

“I’ve done a couple of things that have been dramatic and sometimes I get frustrated because … there was a scene I shot once where it was like, ‘Oh this woman is so sad that she’s doing this thing’ and when we screened it people laughed.

Her new movie also includes trage-comic moments and she’s relying on the audience to get them. “I know that there’s some really dark moments and there’s some really funny moments and it’s kind of up to the audience to interpret them,” she says.

“Welcome to Me” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall and opens in theaters on May 1.
