The Duchess of Cambridge, better known as Kate, gave birth this morning to a strapping baby girl weighing 8lbs 3oz. Now the game begins to guess they princess’s new name. Will it be Diana, after her late grandmother?

English tabloids are already rife with speculation over the baby’s new name.

So far, the leading candidate is Charlotte, according to London’s Daily Mail, which has polled bookie halls.

The second most favorite name is Alice.

Kate gave birth at 8:34 am, London time or 3:34 am Eastern Standard time. The Palace announced the birth at around 11 am. London time today (May 2).

Prince William was at her side when she gave birth. “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well,” the palace said in a statement.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news,” the statement added.

Both leading names in betting halls have familial and historic significance.

Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles and would honor grandfather Prince Charles, who is heir to the throne. Charlotte is also the middle name of Kate’s sister Pippa.

The wife of King George III was also named Charlotte and her daughter, born in 1766, was also named Charlotte. At least one other royal sibling was also named Charlotte, the only daughter of King George IV, according to the Mail.

Alice was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and the great-grandmother of the Duke of Edinburgh.

William and Kate appear to prefer tradition without much deference to the immediate royal family. They named their first born boy George.

Bookies say there is a 10-to-one chance the child will be named Diana. Other names getting attention are Elizabeth, Victoria and Alexandra.

The new baby is fourth in line to the throne behind Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George.
