Charlize Theron has a big bone to pick with Hollywood that runs the gamut of issues facing actresses, from misogyny to sexism to unequal pay for the same work as male actors. And, she says she’s “pissed off” about it.

Like most in Hollywood, her eyes were opened with confidential Sony Pictures emails leaked in the infamous North Korean hacking scandal.

Among other things, she was shocked to discover how much less Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were paid compared with male stars in the movie “American Hustle.”

“When I thought about the temperature out there–with finding out what Jennifer and Amy were being paid on a set with guy actors who are their counterpart–they’re just as good as any of the guys on there. Yeah, that pissed me off!” she tells the upcoming UK issue of Elle magazine.

She says she was determined to get paid as high as co-star Chris Hemsworth on the sequel to their movie “Snow White and the Huntsman,” She was surprised to see Universal Pictures come through for her.

“I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes. They did not fight it,” she says.

She adds:

“And maybe that’s the message: That we just need to put our foot down. This is a good time for us to bring this to a place of fairness, and girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing. It doesn’t mean that you hate men. It means equal rights. If you’re doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way.”

Drawing from her own experience after her film debut in 1996’s “2 Days In The Valley,” Theron also charged that the film industry all too often “objectifies” actresses.

“Someone thought it was a good idea to market almost the entire movie on me; objectifying me a little bit. I got a lot of attention from it, but the problem was that, afterwards, it was like, ‘We want you to do that again. Can you just do that? And so I didn’t work for almost two years.’”

She doesn’t have that problem now. In addition to her “Snow White” sequel, Theron is starring in a new Mad Max sequel and filming a picture with her new fiance Sean Penn, who is directing.

“Putting aside that he’s my partner, he’s the love of my life; for the first time, I felt that my work was really bleeding into my life and that made it hard. There were moments where I was incredibly unfair to him. And moments where I felt like he was incredibly unfair to me. But it makes you realize that no matter how complicated it gets, the priority is the relationship.”

In addition to her Elle interview, Charlize has also snagged cover features for Esquire magazine and Interview magazine. Check out her photos, let us know your thoughts and be sure to follow IM on Twitter for the latest celebrity news.
