She longs, she says, for something deeper and more meaningful.
Delevingne, 22, the younger sister of model Poppy Delevingne, frets that she can’t escape the stereotypes about her to pursue her real interests in music and acting.
“I ended up feeling a bit empty,” she tells the Wall Street Journal magazine about her exploding fashion career. “Fashion is about what’s on the outside, and that’s it. There’s no searching, it’s just creating pretty things.”
The demands of the industry often are also soul-crushing, she adds.
“It’s horrible living in a world where I’ll get a call from someone saying, So-and-so says you were partying a lot and you were looking this way and you need to lose weight,” she explains. “It makes me so angry. If you don’t want to hire me, don’t hire me.”
Her comments may come as a surprise, since she looks so effortlessly beautiful in campaigns for such brands as H&M, Burberry, Blumarine, DKNY, Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, Zara and Chanel.
She also appears to move effortlessly in Hollywood and New York and hot spots around the globe. She counts among her friends A-listers like Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Pharrell Williams and actress Geraldine Chaplin.
She’s rumored to have had steamy affairs with actress Michelle Rodriguez, musician St. Vincent and even gal pal Rihanna among others.
She raised eyebrows last summer when she posted photos of her and Gomez entwined in bed in their undies while on vacation in St. Tropez.
Thanks to the tabloids, she’s basically known in the United States for her Instagram selfies, her funny-face paparazzi photos, bushy eyebrows and celebrity pals, not to mention a few embarrassments.
She was summarily sacked two years ago by fashion retailer H&M after being photographed dropping a baggie of white powder on the steps of her London townhouse as she fumbled for her door key.
But nothing has been quite as frustrating as trying to jump-start an acting career.
“I basically gave up on acting, because trying to get an agent was impossible. Everyone said, ‘You’re just a model.’”
But she scored some bit parts in small movies and a significant cameo in the 2012 film “Anna Karenina,” an offbeat interpretation of Tolstoy’s epic 1877 novel.
Which sets the stage for her another disappointment. She was all psyched to appear in a new movie about the Beach Boys with girlfriend Rihanna only to learn the movie was cancelled.
Rihanna had to talk her out of her funk. “Everything happens for a reason,” she reportedly told Cara. “You are going to call me back in a week or two and say, ‘You are right.’”
That really helped, and led to her biggest role to date after a Beach Boys producer recommended her for the idie romantic-comedy “Paper Towns.” Still, she pretty much plays to type, a mysteriously impish girl. It opens July 24.
Coming up, though, she has roles in two hot movies. She plays a mermaid in the British-American fantasy film “Pan,” starring Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara and Amanda Seyfried.
And, she has a meatier role in the upcoming DC Comics film “Suicide Squad.” She plays June Moone, aka, Enchantress, in the ensemble picture. It stars Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie.
“I don’t want to be that cliché: model-slash-actress,” she tells the magazine. “With modeling, if someone else gets a job, I’m like, Yeah, of course, there are so many better models. But with acting, you grow such an attachment to each role.”
“I want to prove that you can be anything you want to be. I love working, and I love what I do. If I fuck it up now, it’s all my fault,” she says.
