Bristol Palin, the daughter of 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, has addressed the circumstances surrounding her failed wedding to former Marine and Medal of Honor winner Dakota Meyer, who became embroiled in a marriage scandal.

Palin, 24, said in a post, titled “The Wedding That Didn’t Happen,” that she felt a need to “address the elephant-in-the-room.”

“I’m sure you’ve seen this has been all over the media, but this is a painful time for family and friends and I would just really appreciate your prayers,” she wrote.

The wedding was slated to be held in Lexington, Kentucky, at Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby. But it was called off by Bristol’s mom last Monday.

“They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held, Sarah Palin wrote on her Facebook page.

The abrupt change in plans was triggered by news that Meyer, 26, was married in 2008 to high-school sweetheart Cassandra Wain. Although the separated, Meyer was unable to show proof that the marriage had actually ended in a divorce.

Meyer’s lawyer said Meyer and Wain legally divorced on March 3, 2010, in a civil parting and have remained in touch.

Bristol said she was aware of the marriage, but the first hint of trouble came when Sarah showed up in Kentucky without her.

Oddly, Bristol has her own checkered past. She gave birth out of wedlock at 17 to son Tripp, who is now six years old. She later became engaged to the father, Levi Johnson, but the two eventually split before getting married.

“I know God’s plan is greater than anything else, and Tripp and I are in Alaska beginning to rebuild our lives under much different circumstances than we anticipated,” Bristol wrote.
