O’Neal, 51, has battled the Hollywood evils of an earlier era–alcohol and drug addiction–including a nasty heroin habit.
But the mother of three and former wife of tennis ace John McEnroe, told People in a new interview that she finds women gentler and more intelligent than men she’s met recently.
“I like women. I definitely have been dating mostly women recently,” she said.

IM first reported on the trend in January last year. A more open and accepting climate in Hollywood makes it possible for gay actors to come out unlike any previous time in film history.
But the question has to be asked: Is the latest trend a true expression of sexuality, or merely celebrities trying to stay relevant by jumping on a band wagon.
Evan Rachel Wood, Anna Paquin, Kristanna Loken, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Aubrey O’Day, Angelina Jolie, Amber Heard and Megan Fox have all at one time or another professed to be bi-sexual. From the music industry, add Fergie, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and others.
In the gay community, bisexuals have sometimes been branded as greedy or illegitimate, according to Emily Dievendorf, Director of Policy, Equality Michigan, writing in the HuffingtonPost.
Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon, now openly gay, was repelled by the term “bi-sexual,” because it connotes an “ugly stereotype” in the gay community, Divendorf noted.
O’Neal says women have filled a much needed gap in her love life, but doesn’t rule out dating men again. ‘I’m not one or the other,’ she said about her sexuality. She has not been romantically linked with women in the past.
She wouldn’t be the first woman to switch hit. Heard was in a three-year relationship with photographer Tesya Van Ree, but now is engaged to actor Johnny Depp. Heche had a three-year relationship with Ellen DeGeneres, before she started dating men again.
Despite her stormy past, Tatum said she is clean and in a good place. “I’m the most content I’ve ever been,’ she said.
