Jimmy Fallon gave everyone the finger on the “Tonight Show.” Not that one, but the one he injured in a freak fall in his kitchen that almost resulted in an amputation and forced him to spend 10 days in a hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

Oddly no knives or sharp edges were involved.

As Jimmy explained it, he suffered a “ring avulsion,” which is a tear in the finger caused when a ring is snagged on something. In this case it was a countertop.

“Basically what happened is I tripped and fell in my kitchen,” he explained. “I caught my fall and I’m getting up and my finger is sideways.

“So I go, ‘oh my god, did I just break my finger? This is the lamest thing in the whole world.'”

But it was no simple break. The skin and muscle in the finger was severely torn. In effect, his finger was almost torn off.

“It completely looks fake. It looks like a cheap horror movie where you see a broken finger. It looks like that,” he said.

Fallon said he ended up at Bellvue Hospital in New York City and had to undergo micro-surgery to repair the damage. The surgery lasted six hours.

“Apparently, the odds aren’t great and usually they just cut your finger off,” he said.

Doctors saved the finger by taking a vein out of his foot and using it to re-establish blood flow to his finger. He says he is unlikely to get any feeling back for as long as eight weeks.

On the upside, Fallon added: “I should say, the fall was funny. I’m a comedian so I have to fall funny.”
