Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t the only star of Comic Con San Diego this year. The biggest attraction, as always, were the hundreds, if not thousands of fans, who dressed up as their favorite comic book or movie characters, rivaling some of the best Hollywood makeup artists.
Cosplay, a mashup of the words costume and role-play, began in Japan in the 1980s.
Today, the performance art has spread around the world.
Cosplayers have their own subcultures and social media sets that revolve around their favorite movies, TV shows, video games and comic books, according to one popular history.
In fact, Comic Con is one of the largest gatherings of cosplayers anywhere. They acted out a kaleidoscopic of whacked out, insane-in-the-membrane characters as well as fairy tale princesses. For the dedicated, it’s not only about costumes, but also about acting in character.
Amid this year’s scene, Gandolf from the “Hobbit” movies was a popular character as were “Doctor Who” cosplayers.
“Sharknado 3” had a street team that paraded down 5th street in the Gaslamp District. The Gotham street team also strolled around the Gaslamp District as the Penguin.
“The Walking Dead” booth brought loads of zombies and a new fan thrill. They could interact with “walkers” in a dimly lit trailer.
Even the pedicabs got into the act. They were decorated in different themes including one that offered a ride on the Iron Throne featured in HBO’s hit “Game of Thrones.”
