“Ant-Man,” starring Paul Rudd was no small fry at the box office, edging out Adam Sandler comedy “Pixels” and former No. 1 champ “Minions,” with a respectable $24.8 million take. But it fell far shot of other Marvel comic book movies.
“Southpaw,” starring a pumped up Jake Gyllenhaal and “Paper Towns,” featuring model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne, both debuted with respectable showings in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
In Ant-Man, Rudd plays petty thief and two-time loser Scott Lang. He’s recruited by scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to test an experimental suit that shrinks Lang to the size of an ant and give’s him an ant’s proportional strength.
Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Anthony Mackie, Wood Harris, Judy Greer and David Dastmalchian also appear in the film.
Newcomers “Paper Towns” and “Southpaw” didn’t fare quite so well with critics.
