Victor Espinoza, the famed horse racing jockey and 2015 Triple Crown winner, stumbled out of the gate on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” and became the second celebrity voted off the show, even though he regained his footing in his final dance last night (Sept. 23).

Also, how many fans does horse racing have anyway?

Espinoza, who was paired with the always sexy Karina Smirnoff, fell victim to fan voting, which often doesn’t reflect the dancers’ skills.

He finished in the bottom two in the judge’s scoring with whacked actor Gary Busey and his pro partner Anna Trebunskaya. But Busey appeared to have the bigger fan base.

Espinoza and Smirnoff scored 17 out of 30 points on the Monday (Sept. 21) show. Busey and Trebunskaya edged them by a point with an 18 score out of 30.

Espinoza danced a floppy salsa that played too much off his horse racing background. His Jive didn’t really jibe with the judges. But he seemed to score a breakthrough in his final dance, the Rumba to “Girl of Fire.”

“Victor, you looked like you were 10 feet tall,” judge Julianne Hough said. Ouch! Victor is only five-feet, two.

Still she added: “The way you handled Karina was beautiful. Best dance you have done.”

They received a 20 out of 30 from the judges, his best score on the show.

Truth be told, however, the 43-year-old equestrian was just a little too stiff and never got into the swing of things, despite his glowing personality.

Busey wasn’t much better and seemed like the better choice to be voted off. But, hey, at this point it’s all about the fan base. They can keep bad dancers in the competition well beyond their time.

A case in point is Paula Deen and pro dancer Louis Van Amstel. Her tango was a tangle and she looks like she’s moving in slow motion compared to the other dancers.

She’s right on par with Chaka Khan and Teo Motsepe, the first pair to be voted off on Monday’s show. But the Southern chef has a fiercely loyal following.

They have stuck with her despite her implosion over racially demeaning comments she made a two years ago. As a result, Paula likely will be around long after her skill level justifies her departure.

Leaders, Bindi Irwin and Backstreet Boy Nick Carter seem comfortably safe. With Tamar Braxton and Val Chmerkovskiy coming on strong, the show can only get better.
