Donald Trump has already lost the Hispanic vote and the African-American vote. Now he’s kissing off the Catholic vote after butting heads with Pope Francis today (Sept 24) over his call for compassion and action on immigration and global warming.
Pope Francis made an historic address to Congress, the first ever by a sitting Pontiff. Trump was asked his reaction by CNN.
At issue were illegal immigration and global warming, two topics on which Trump has been outspoken.
In a separate address to more than 10,000 people on the South Lawn of the White House, the Pope praised President Obama for his initiative on global warming and said it was an issue that could “no longer be left to a future generation.”
The Pope also urged Americans not to fear immigrants and to welcome them to this country.
Trump strongly disagreed on both counts.
He;s called America the greatest and wealthiest country on earth, but told CNN America’s burgeoning $14 trillion national debt means the nation “can’t afford to support” illegal immigration the way Pope Francis would like us to.
“We have a country that is going through tremendous problems. We owe $19 trillion. So number one, we can’t afford this process,” he said.
Trump also repeated his controversial claim that Mexico is purposely sending criminals, rapists and drug dealers across the border.
“We have tremendous crime problems, as you know the illegal immigrants are coming in,” he said. “Thousands and thousands of cases, we’re having tremendous crime waves… we have drugs pouring over our borders,” he said.
He cited one recent murder in San Francisco as an example of crime wave being perpetrated by illegal aliens. But San Francisco doesn’t even rank among the top 30 cities in the United States for murders, even though its considered a “sanctuary city” and haven for illegal immigrants.
In fact, the violent crime rate in the United States had been declining for nearly two decades, according to statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
After posting small increases 2011 and 2012, violent crimes in 2013 fell by 4.4 percent compared to the previous year, according to the most recent figures.
Trump has called for the forced deportation of more than 12 million illegal immigrants and their children, even if they were born here and building a border-length wall with Mexico.
In fact, most illegal immigrants come from South America, not Mexico.
Trump said he does not believe in global warming. Efforts to curb pollution would “imperil the companies within our countries,” he said.
“I believe in clean air, immaculate air. I believe in clean water. All of those things,’ Trump said on CNN. ‘But I don’t think we can destroy our country,” he said.
Trump said the world’s biggest problem regarding climate are nuclear weapons in the hands of incompetent politicians.
