Tesla will attempt to crack the soccer mom market with an all new, all-electric sport utility vehicle designed to seat up to seven and run solely on two electric motors. But the futuristic car will cost more than $130,000.

The model is distinctive because of the way it’s doors open. They’re know as “falcon” doors because they fold upward like wings.

But whether that’s a plus for the harried suburban mom remains to be seen. They typically don’t like unusual features or technology. Men have been more interested in the car so far, according to press reports.

But hey, it’s an electric car, so if they’re good with that, the doors shouldn’t matter.

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk originally promised to start selling the car by the end of 2013. But production delays pushed that date out.

Now, the first cars will be delivered today (Sept. 29). Tesla also has scheduled to officially roll out the car tonight at 8pm.

Despite its list price of $130,000 for its top-of-the-line model, Tesla expects to sell 50,000 Model X’s in 2015 and 500,000 by 2020, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The company said it has 30,000 pre-orders. Typically that requires an initial $5,000 payment and later a $40,000 down payment, according to Tesla’s Web site.

The car is based on the same platform as Tesla’s Model S. But other than it’s unique doors, the company hasn’t released a lot of details about the SUV model.

Because there is no engine or transmission, the car reportedly has more interior room than a similar sized SUV. Plus, it will reportedly go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, faster than all but the most exotic sports cars.

So far, Tesla is the only car maker with an all-electric SUV. Audi is reportedly working on one for sale in 2018, according to The Journal.
