Demi Lovato was once the poster girl for body dysmorphia. She struggled for years with her self image leading up to a meltdown and rehab. But she finds empowerment by appearing nude, without makeup or photo retouching, in the latest issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

The former Disney teen queen and singer says the essence of female empowerment is feeling comfortable in your own skin no matter how you look.

“The reason why I decided to do this photo shoot was because when I think of confidence, I think of many things. But one thing in particular is feeling comfortable in your own skin,” she says in a newly released video.

“I thought there was something incredible about the idea of no makeup whatsoever, no clothes, and no retouching,” she added.

Lovato broke into show business as a child actress on the hit children’s show, “Barney & Friends.” In 2008, when she was just 16, she scored a breakthrough in the Disney Channel television film “Camp Rock.”

But she paid a price for early fame.

In 2010, her world came crashing down. She broke down after she punched a back up dancer during the South American leg of her worldwide concert tour with the Jonas Brothers.

She quit the tour and checked herself into rehab for “emotional and physical issues.”

A year earlier, Demi had made headlines when she appeared in public sporting what appeared to be scars on her wrist from alleged self-cutting.

“I suffered from eating disorders, and basically went from hating every single inch of my body to working on myself, and trying to figure out ways to love myself,” she tells Vanity Fair.

When she emerged from rehab, Demi became an advocate for healthy lifestyles and accepting who you are.

“You can get to a place where you overcome the obstacles of body image issues,” she says.

Demi talks about her decision to pose nude in a video released today (Oct. 2).
