Bindi, 17, and her pro dance partner Derek Hough appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” today (Nov. 25) to talk about their victory.
“This girl is so special,” said dance partner Hough. “It’s been an amazing journey. I love this girl so much.”
It’s a journey that the studio audience and viewers shared. Bindi was the first contestant announced for Season 21 and never really looked back.
She led throughout the show, despite strong competition from Nick Carter and Sharna Burgess and Alek Skarlatos and Lindsay Arnold, who were among the three finalists.
Bindi is the daughter of the late Steve Irwin, a well-known naturalist who hosted his own television show, taking daring risks with wild and sometimes deadly animals.
Steve was killed in 2006 when a stingray barb pierced his heart. He was filming underwater for his show. Bindi was eight years old at the time. Since then, she’s followed in her father’s footsteps working as a conservationist.
On part one of the finale, she showed the last photo taken with her dad before he died. If that didn’t cement her victory, nothing would.
She was gracious (no surprise) in her victory.
“I feel like my family has been extended. I have this gorgeous family. This experience will forever be part of my life and will live in my heart.”
After her win last night, Bindi can probably write her own ticket in Hollywood. Since Disney owns ABC, she’d be a natural for positive teen movies.
