Donald Trump, who’s managed to alienate key voting blocs, not to mention his GOP rivals, promised last night on Jimmy Kimmel to show a kinder, gentler side now that he is ahead in most early polls. He even softened his position on Muslims and immigration.

“I’ve been a little bit divisive,” Trump acknowledged, after Kimmel noted that he’d eased up on his opponents during the CNN debate.

With a solid lead in GOP primary polls, Trump appeared ready to become more statesman-like. While he said he still plans to build a big wall on the Mexican border, it will have a “big door” because “we want people to come in legally,” he said.

Trump, in recent days, has also softened his stance on barring Muslims from entering the country. Now he says it will be “temporary” until we “get to the bottom” of who the terrorists are.

His proposal to have Muslims register with the government drew comparisons with Hitler’s treatment of the Jews, and produced a huge backlash among civil libertarians and his Democratic rivals.
