Just when it seemed Kanye West had finally proved he’s a smart, level-headed guy, he goes and makes an ass of himself, again. The rapper Tweeted yesterday that in his esteemed estimation Bill Cosby is innocent of sex assault allegations made by more than 50 women.

It’s hard to say where West is coming from. He simply Tweeted “BILL COSBY INNOCENT” in his pompous, all-caps style.

Wonder what wifey Kim Kardashian thinks of that? Maybe it will be an episode on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

Whatever the case, his Tweet became a trending topic on Twitter.

On its face, the comment is totally misogynistic. Even, if only one quarter of the women are telling the truth, that would still make Cosby one of the worst serial rapists in U.S. history.

The alleged assaults go back more than five decades, pretty much the entire span of Cosby’s career. He was able to skate for so long simply because of his image and his celebrity status.

Maybe that’s what this is all about. West may simply be taking a stand on celebrity entitlement, or more cynically, using Cosby to draw attention to his new album.

Cosby, of course, will ultimately get his day in court. He’s facing criminal charges in Pennsylvania over a 2004 assault case involving one of the women, Andrea Constand.

At the time of the alleged assault in 2004, Constand was director of operations for the women’s basketball team at Temple University. Cosby attended school there and became a major donor.

She sued him in civil court in 2005. The case was settled out of court a year later. During the pretrial phase, Cosby admitted in testimony that he bought powerful sedatives to give to women so he could have sex with them.

Cosby was charged with one count of aggravated indecent assault, a felony, on Dec. 30. Montgomery County (Pa) prosecutor Kevin Steele said at a news conference that it’s illegal “to have sex with someone who is unconscious or is unaware that ‘penetration is occurring.'”

At least seven other women are suing Cosby in civil court.

In one of the most recent developments, Los Angeles Superior Court judge Debre Katz Weintraub dismissed Cosby’s former lawyer, Marty Singer as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by former model Janice Dickenson.

But the case is still proceeding against Cosby, according to Dickenson’s lawyer Lisa Bloom. The case will be back in court later this month.
