Kristen Stewart gives new meaning to plain vanilla. A new trailer for her upcoming sci-fi film “Equals” paints a dark picture of a stark “Utopia” where everything is perfect–and perfectly white–until a plague unleashes emotions she thought she never had.

The trailer suggests the movie will be lush and highly atmospheric.

Stewart’s character Nia lives in an antiseptic society devoid of feeling, want or passion. But things change when she contracts a rare virus.

She learns that co-worker, Silas, played by Nicholas Hoult, suffers from the same affliction. They only difference is authorities know about his infection, but not hers.

Silas has to go on the run or be killed, and Nia goes with him. That leads to a hot mess love affair filled with all the passion (and sex!) that has been banned from their society in order to preserve the peace.

The overriding theme of the movie is are you willing to risk everything for love?

At its heart, the film is more fodder for the teen and 20-something market. Call it “Divergent” light. What might make it interesting is Director Drake Doremus.

The indie darling is best known for the 2011 film “Like Crazy.” It won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. His 2010 film, “Douchebag,” won the Dramatic competition at Sundance, as well.

The trailer doesn’t shed much light on the plot; instead it features the lush cinematography by John Guleserian, who collaborated previously with Doremus on “Like Crazy” and “Breathe In” and the 2013 film “About Time.”

Sci-fi master Ridley Scott is executive producer.
