Alicia Vikander scored a breakout role in “The Danish Girl” that catapulted her to an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress last night at the 88th Academy Awards. With a film resume as thin as a razor, she did the near impossible. Now, she’s Hollywood’s newest A-Lister.
The Swedish actress was also nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actor’s Guild Award.
She lost the Golden Globe to actress Kate Winslet for her role in the Apple founder movie “Steve Jobs.” But in a harbinger of what was to come, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award.
On Oscar night, she was up against Winslet again. Other nominees included veteran actresses Jennifer Jason Leigh in “The Hateful Eight,” Roonery Mara in “Carol,” and Rachel McAdams in “Spotlight.”
Her film resume goes back to 2007 when she appeared in a series of short films. Her first introduction to an American audience came in the 2012 British film “Anna Kerenia,” starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law.
The following year, she appeared in the 2013 thriller, “The Fifth Estate,” directed by Bill Condon. The film, about the news-leaking website WikiLeaks, stared Benedict Cumberbatch.
This year she appeared in the American action comedy “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” The spy film was directed by Guy Ritchie and starred Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer.
She plays the daughter a former Nazi scientist working on a secret weapon.
IM reported on her rising star back in Dec. 2015, on the heels of a stylish photo spread in Vogue magazine’s U.S. edition. We raised the question at the time: Was an Oscar in her future?
Turns out there was. Now she has Hollywood’s attention. She has three film projects coming up in 2016.
“Tulip Fever,” about the 17th Century Tulip mania in Europe, stars Dane DeHaan and Christoph Waltz. She’ll also appear in “The Light Between Oceans” with Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, the film is about an Australian couple living in a remote lighthouse. A child washes up in small boat and they decide to raise her.
Vikander will also star in the upcoming fifth “Bourne” film, directed by Paul Greengrass, according to deadline.com.
