Nick Gordon made his first public statement through his lawyers about Bobbi Kristina Brown’s autopsy report and took a decidedly low road, suggesting she may have committed suicide, while asserting his innocence.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner was ordered to make public the autopsy findings, which had been sealed for more than eight months.
It ruled that her death was clearly not due to natural causes. But the medical examiner was unable to determine whether it was murder or accidental. It classified the case as “undetermined.”
The left the door open for Gordon to put his spin on the findings.
His lawyers issued a blistering statement today (Feb. 8), claiming the medical examiner tried to cover-up evidence in her death. They called the episode a “tragic accident” an even suggested she may have committed suicide.
The autopsy found in her system marijuana, alcohol, a cocaine-related substance called benzoylecgonine, morphine and benzodiazepines, which are medications used for sedation or to treat anxiety. The morphine was believed to be a byproduct of heroin.
Lawyers representing Bobbi Kristina’s estate filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Gordon in June. It claims he placed her in the bathtub and let her drown in a fit of jealous rage.
Both the Houston and Brown families have painted Gordon as the bad guy. He was barred from attending Bobbi Kristina’s funeral and seeing her in the hospital.
Meanwhile, police are continuing a homicide investigation into Bobbi Kristina’s death. Gordon has been named as a “person of interest.”
But his lawyers, Jose Baez and Joe S. Habachy, assert that the autopsy findings clearly prove Gordon’s innocence.
“The truth is that Nick tried to save Bobbi Kristina’s life. The truth is that Nick cooperated with law enforcement since day one,” the statement said.
“The truth is that no one loved Bobbi Kristina more than Nick and no one has suffered more as a result of her death than Nick,” they added.
Baez and Habachy saved their harshest words for the Fulton County District Attorney. They said the office tried to cover up the cause of her death because it would prove Gordon’s innocence.
“Nick has been publicly humiliated for more than a year,” the statement said.
“The Fulton County District Attorney’s office has tried to make Nick a murderer despite having clear and convincing evidence that Bobbi Kristina’s death was nothing more than a tragic accident,” they added.
“[Yet], the District Attorney’s office fought to seal and conceal from the public rather than allowing her fans to know the truth,” they said.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Henry Newkirk repeatedly reiterated that the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office has had 13 months to investigate,” the statement reads.
“By failing to acknowledge that there is simply no evidence of any wrongdoing, they have in essence helped feed the slanderous media frenzy regarding Nick Gordon,” it adds.
The said the “right thing to do is for the District Attorney to tell the public the truth… that this was an accident… or even a suicide, but not a murder.”
“And the right thing for everyone to do is let Nick live his life now and let Bobbi Kristina rest in peace.”
Bobby Kristina was found unconscious in a bathtub filled with water almost two years to the day after her mother was found submerged in a hotel bathtub on the eve of the 2012 Grammy Awards.
No suicide note was found.
