Haruka Weiser, the 18-year-old dance and theater major at the University of Texas was allegedly murdered by a 17-year-old homeless teen, who was arrested today (Apr. 8) in connection with the killing, according to police and local media outlets.

Weiser was last seen alive on the Austin, Tex. campus on Sunday (Apr. 3). Her brutalized body was found in a creek behind the school on Tuesday (Apr. 5).

Police released security camera images of a man who was in the vicinity of the murder. He was walking a girl’s bicycle.

The suspect, arrested yesterday (Apr. 7) was identified as Meechaiel Criner, desribed by police as a 17-year-old homeless person.

He was booked on murder charges and is being held in the Travis County Jail, Austin police said at a news conference.

“We’re going to bring justice to that family, and restore the sense of safety that this campus and this community has enjoyed,” Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said at the news conference this morning. He did not comment on the motive.

“There are no known relationships with UT we can determine at this time,” Acevedo said of Criner. “He is not a student.”

She was last seen leaving the drama building at around 9:30 p.m. on April 3. Her roommates called police later that night when they failed to hear from her.

Apparently, investigators were able to break the case based on a tip from Austin firefighters. They responded to a small fire and found a backpack ablaze near the campus Acevedo revealed.

Criner was at the scene. A witness to the fire also identified Criner from the surveillance video and reported seeing him near the fire.

Criner was picked up at LifeWorks, a homeless shelter. He had in his possession a blue duffle bag belonging to Weiser. They also found a bike that matched the one in the surveillance video, Acevedo said.
