Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd were crowned the season 22 champions on Dancing With the Stars last night (may 24) in a stunning finish filled with emotion. In the two-hour season finale they were pitted against Ginger Zee and Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Paige VanZant and Mark Ballas.

The winning couple not only had to capture the judges’ votes but also votes from viewers.

The show got off to a roaring start with an opening number featuring all 12 of this season’s couples.

They included Wanya Morris and Lindsay Arnold, Antonio Brown and Sharna Burgess, Jodie Sweetin and Keo Motsepe and Kim Fields and Sasha Farber.

Von Miller and Witney Carson, Doug Flutie and Karina Smirnoff, Marla Maples and Tony Dovolani, Mischa Barton and Artem Chigvintsev and Geraldo Rivera and Edyta Sliwinska rounded out the contestants.

Also on the finale, Pitbull performed “Messin’ Around,” Aloe Blacc, performed “Let the Games Begin” and Fifth Harmony, performed “Flex.”

Fleur East performed “Sax” while Fields and Farber danced with the show’s female pro dancers. Brothers Maksim and Valentin also previewed a number from their summer tour, “Maks & Val Live On Tour: Our Way.”

The show’s final round was called one of the closest ever. But Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd were clearly the sentimental favorites week after week.

The America’s Next Top Model winner rarely missed a beat, even though he is deaf.

In the final routine, a fusion of several dance styles, Nyle and Peta received a perfect score for their cha cha/tango.

But Paige and Mark kept it competitive with a perfect score for their jive/salsa combo. Ginger and Val scored a 27 with their foxtrot/Argentine Tango.

The results put Ginger on the bubble and she was the first finalist eliminated.

“I am so proud and I’m so grateful for Val and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be here,” Zee said. “Im a girl who loves storms and who I hope someone can take away from this that you can be more than one thing.”

Although both remaining couples scored perfect 30s in their final dances, in the end, Peta and Nyle captured viewers’ hearts.

“This is such an amazing feeling,” said Murgatroyd after being crowned. “This whole thing has been so incredible because of this man. I owe everything to him.”
