Gomez plays Dot, a runaway… teen? Isn’t she getting a little too old for these young adult roles?
In any event, the scene features her meeting up with Trevor, a teen suffering from muscular dystrophy played by Craig Roberts. He’s accompanied by Ben, played by Paul Rudd.
Ben is Trevor’s caregiver. He’s decided to take the teen on a life-experiencing road trip. They get more than they bargain for when they sit down over waffles with Dot.
She doesn’t mince words when she asks quizzically about his illness. “Can they fix it?” she asks.
“No not yet,” says Trevor.
That “fu*king blows,” Dot responds.
But wait she gets naughtier.
“Does it hurt?” she says. “Does it affect your brains?”
Then she says it: “Does your penis work?”
Whew! That’s pretty nasty! Actually, it’s pretty clinical. Do you really think a waif on the run would say penis, instead of say, dick?
Then she says it again!
Rob Burnett wrote and directed the film based on the 2012 novel of same name by Jonathan Evison.
“The Fundamentals Of Caring” film premiered at The Sundance Film Festival in January to favorable reviews. It scored a 70 on Metacritic. It will debut on June 24 on Netflix.
