Selena Gomez was heart broken over the death of singer Christina Grimmie. Not only were they close personal friends, but Christina’s death also touched on her own fears and her worst nightmare.

Kevin James Loibl, a deranged fan, shot Grimmie as she signed autographs following a concert in Orlando, Fla. on June 10.

The scenario is similar to the fate that befell Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in 1995. Selena Gomez is named in honor of the late Mexican Tejano singer.

She also is haunted by her namesake’s death and secretly fears that it could happen to her as well, according to a source close to the singer.

Grimmie’s death and visions about her own potential fate, hit Selena very close to home.

“My heart is absolutely broken. I miss you Christina,” Selena wrote on Instagram with a black-and-white photo of the two together.

At the Miami performance of her “Revival World Tour,” Selena spoke to fans about her loss.

“When she was 14, we met her and my parents and I signed her. One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it’s not about a religion and it’s not about anything or good deeds. It’s just that she had faith, and I don’t really understand how this really happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her.”

Selena fought back tears as she sang Hillsong Worship’s “Transfiguration” at the piano in honor of her fallen friend. She must have also had thoughts about Quintanilla-Pérez.

She was a Mexican-American singer, songwriter, actress and fashion designer. Although she was known as the Queen of Tejano music, she also crossed over into pop with her distinct sound. In the 1990s, she was the world’s top selling Latin artist and often compared to Madonna.

In March 1995, Selena met with the head of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar, to discuss financial irregularities. A heated argument followed. Saldivar pulled a gun and shot Selena, who died from the wound in a hospital. She was 23.

Gomez has modeled her career after her. She is a singer, songwriter, actress and is rapidly making inroads into fashion. Selena is also 23. She turns 24 next month.

Grimmie was just 22. She’s best known for being a contestant last year on Season 6 of “The Voice,” NBC’s reality singing competition. She finished third.

She released her debut studio album With Love in 2013 and followed by an EP, titled Side A, this year.

Grimmie was signing autographs following her performance at The Plaza Live in Orlando when Loibl shot her. Christina’s brother Marcus tackled the gunman, but he was still able to shoot and kill himself.

Grimmie was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, but died early on June 11.

She was buried in a private ceremony in her hometown on June 16.

“Words cannot begin to describe the pain I am feeling,” said Gomez’s stepfather, Brian Teefey, who managed Christina. “I learned this business through the eyes of a father and Christina was like a second daughter to me,” he added in a statement.
