Britney Spears in 2001

Britney Spears’ down and dirty turn early in her career is coming back to haunt her. A parent’s group is outraged over Fox television’s Britney themed “Glee” episode, claiming it amounted to “explicit sexual content.” Say what?

The Parents Television Council, founded by right-wing activist L. Brent Bozell III in 1995, said the Britney episode won the “Worst TV Show of the Week” award because of “skimpy outfits” and “sultry grinds” during her hit song “I’m a Slave 4 U.”

Where has the group been for the last decade?

Spears began her career as a squeaky clean member of Disney’s “The Mickey Mouse Club.”

In 1998, when she was ready to launch her musical career, her first hit single and video were decidedly “un-Disney.”

Her debut album, …Baby One More Time, was released in Jan. 1999 and shocked her fans because of its risqué content. Her video was deemed obscene. Spears was 17 at the time.

After that, her style became increasingly debauched and sexually charged, and she gained a reputation as a seductress.

The hugely anticipated Britney episode was based on music from that period as well as later selections.

Heather Morris, dressed in some of Britney’s raunchier outfits, nailed her risqué style, including lots of girl-on-girl action.

The group charged that Spears wasn’t a suitable role model for the show to begin with.

“The mostly young teen/tween audience basically witnessed an endorsement of narcotics abuse, public masturbation, and school-sanctioned burlesque,” the group asserted.

“But perhaps most troubling is the deification of a troubled pop star into a symbol of empowerment and self-esteem,” it continued.

“Considering her stints in rehab, her very public breakdowns, and her questionable parenting skills, there is absolutely no way Spears should be considered a role model.”

The Britney Glee episode, however, earned its highest ratings ever, drawing 13.3 million viewers.

Welcome to television, circa 2010.
