The meme, blasted over Twitter under Trump’s name, shows Clinton against a backdrop of $100 bills.
A red six-pointed star superimposed beside her contains the words “Most Corrupt Candidate Ever.” (see image)
The image caused social media to explode in protest. To critics, the symbolism was clear: It was a dig against Jews that played to Trump’s anti-Semitic and white supremacist followers.
The star has a double meaning to Jews. It symbolizes David from the Bible and is also known as the “Shield of David.” It appears on the Israeli national flag.
But the star was also used to identify Jews in Nazi Germany. The were required by law to wear it in public and came to symbolize the Holocaust.
The outrage clearly threw the Trump presidential campaign for a loop. But the Donald wasn’t about to apologize.
Instead, he claimed the symbol was nothing more than a star. He even likened it to a sheriff’s star from the Old West.
But he didn’t stop there. Yesterday, he tweeted a cover of a Disney coloring book from the movie “Frozen.” It featured a similar star.
“Where is the outrage?” Trump Tweeted. He blamed the “dishonest media” for creating the controversy over his meme.
But Trump apparently doesn’t realize symbolism is all about context. Trump meme, intended, or not, clearly played off the ugly stereotype that Jews are greedy and corrupt and Clinton is in league with them.
A simple apology probably would have sufficed. But Trump’s obstinance is only keeping the issue in the forefront of the news cycle for yet another day.
