Six other top films are scheduled to open. Kristen will even be competing against herself.
Woody Allen film “Cafe Society” opens this weekend starring Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg.
Plus last week’s blockbuster, “The Secret Life of Pets,” is expected to do well again.
But here’s the real kicker: “Equals” has the worst rating of the bunch, according to rottentomatoes, which tracks movie reviews.
The film will open against “Ghost Busters”(77 percent rating), “The Infiltrator” (83 percent rating), “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” (77 percent rating) and “Cafe Society” (67 percent rating).
Two other films opening this weekend, “Outlaws and Angels” and “Undrafted” have no rating.
In contrast, “Equals,” written by Nathan Parker and directed by Drake Doremus, has a rotten 50 percent rating.
Metacritic is even worse. It rated the picture a 37 out of 100, based on 11 reviews.
Stewart has said in the past she likes small indie films because of the quality of the writers and directors. But critics have torn apart “Equals” mostly because of its writing and directing.
Stewart and Hoult have generally received positive reviews for their acting.
The duo plays lovers in a Utopian society that has outlawed all human emotion. They go on the run when they become infected with a disease that causes them to feel emotions and fall in love.
It screened at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. Critics who saw it mostly panned it.
“Feels cobbled together from George Orwell, ‘THX-1138,’ ‘The Giver,’ perfume commercials and the Apple Store. Heck, before this thing’s over, Parker even steals one of Shakespeare’s better-known end-of-Act-II plot twists,” wrote Alonso Duralde for TheWrap.
Although the movie is just finally being released, it was film last year and has been sitting in the can in search of a distributor.
Stewart’s last major release, “American Ultra,” also with Eisenberg, was mostly panned critics and bombed at the box office. It received a 44 rating on rottentomatoes.
Her other film, “Anesthesia,” went straight to video. Stewart plays a self-destructive student who is struggling with depression in the weepy film.
Stewart tried to make the most out of the sci-fi flick’s premiere at the Arclight theater in Hollywood, Thursday (July 7). She wore a revealing black lace Chanel dress with cut-out panels that flashed her cleavage.
