Dr. Strange is mystified by his own superpowers in the latest trailer for the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The doctor, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, toys with mind-bending magic and alternate dimensions.

Disney, which is distributing the film, released the trailer and a new poster to mark the cast’s appearance at San Diego Comic-Con.

The film co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.

Doctor Strange is a fantastic role for the versatile Benedict Cumberbatch, who skillfully portrays the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes in the hit BBC series Sherlock.

Doctor Strange is actually noted neurosurgeon Stephen Strange. He begins his journey into the spiritual and the occult after being injured in a car accident.

He encounters the “Ancient One” in his travels and begins to learn about his strange powers. He also meets Karl Mordo (Ejiofor), who is not quite his enemy and not quite his friend, according to the movie’s synopsis.

In the comic book series, however, writer Stan Lee introduced Mordo as a Super-villain and Stange’s rival.

Mordo has been described as an equally gifted magician, skilled in the black arts, with the power to summon demons.

“This doesn’t make any sense,” the doctor says when he’s told about alternate universe. “Not everything has to,” says the Ancient One (Swinton) in a voice-over.

“With the mystic arts, we harness energy and shape reality,” she adds.

Incidentally, Swinton artfully deflected criticism during the Comic-Con panel that her character “whitewashes” what was originally an Asian character.

“The truth is, anyone of us could be the Ancient One.” Swinton said. “The Ancient One is a title.”

The trailer shows off a lot of mind-bending special effects, which may be the hallmark of this movie.

“Dr. Strange” hits theaters Nov. 11.
