Putting right-wing nut Bill O’Reilly in the same room as Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg is a lot like putting Siamese fighting fish in the same bowl. They will devour each other.
So it went on ABC’s “The View.” The subject was the Sept. 11 terror attacks and the construction of an Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero in downtown Manhattan.
Behar and Goldberg ended up walking out on their own show, when O’Reilly should have been the one walking.
But that’s probably why the show has four hosts. Any two or three can walk out, without leaving viewers staring at empty chairs.
It all began with a discussion about the proposed Islamic cultural center in Manhattan not near, not adjacent, but in the general vicinity of the site of the World Trade Towers, now known as Ground Zero.
O’Reilly insisted it would be “inappropriate” to have a Muslim place of worship so near to Ground Zero.
This prompted Whoopi Goldberg to inquire, “Why is it inappropriate?”
To which O’Reilly replied, “Because Muslims killed us on 9/11.”
Goldberg tried to explain to the blockhead that “extremists” attacked the World Trade Center.
But the Fox News host wasn’t giving in to shades of gray when black and white serves to inflame and incite his viewers so well.
“I don’t want to sit here,” Behar finally brayed.
With that Goldberg and Behar exited stage left… as it were.
Cast member Barbara Walters, far too professional for such behavior, winced: “We should be able to have discussion without . . . walking off stage.”
The pair later returned; what transpired backstage is unknown. But they were able to finish the interview without further fireworks.
Goldberg set a precedent by walking out on D.C. Housewife Michaele Salahi, the so-called White House Gate Crasher, and almost walking out during a show about Tiger Woods.
The next time she walks out, she should just keep walking.
