Demi Lovato made an impassioned plea for laws to improve health care for all Americans at the Democratic National Convention July 25. She spoke openly about her own mental illness and said everyone needs to have the same access to health care.

“Like millions of Americans I am living with mental illness,” she said.

“But I am lucky. I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility. Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, either because they fear the stigma or can’t afford the treatment,” she said.

Lovato suffered a widely publicized breakdown in 2010 while on tour in South American with the Jonas Brothers band. She went into rehab and emerged after three months of treatment.

Demi chronicled her struggles with depression, drug addiction, alcoholism, anorexia and bulimia in her memoir, Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year.

She said then that she had decided to turn her negatives into a positive by speaking out about her ordeal, hopefully to help others. She’s continued to do that ever since. Lovato said she has a bipolar disorder.

She has been a long-time Hillary Clinton supporter and has made other campaign appearances for her. last year, Lovato performed at Clinton’s 68th birthday party in New York City.
