David Ayer, the writer and director of the DC Comics movie “Suicide Squad,” lapsed into some loutish behavior at the film’s New York City premiere last night. He gave a not-so-royal shout out to rival Marvel Comics, which has its own string of highly successful action-adventure movies.

Superhero movies have become big business in Hollywood and practically mint money, no matter how bad they are.

Marvel is by all accounts the king of the box office with such hits as Iron Man series (2008), The Avengers series (2012) and one of the latest hits “Captain America: Civil War.” There seems to be no end to the possibilities.

DC Comics has had its own series of hits largely based around its Superman and Batman franchise, Wonder Woman, The Justice League and now it’s anti-hero “Suicide Squad.”

So you can imagine there’s no small rivalry between the two superhero movie factories.

In any even, Ayer was speaking on stage when someone in the audience shouted out a Marvel insult, according to deadline.com. The director didn’t miss a beat.

“Fu*k Marvel,” he shouted out over the loudspeaker.

He apparently had second thoughts after he left the stage. Did his publicist clue him in? Whatever the case, he was soon on Twitter apologizing for the remark.

And, then, he compounded the mistake by repeating it. D’oh!

“Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers,” he Tweeted.

Ayer may be a bit mercurial. He was kicked out of his house by his parents as a teenager, he once acknowledged in an interview.

But he also served four years in the Navy on submarines and is “a full subscriber to Christianity,” according to Shia LaBeouf who worked with him on World War II film, “Fury,” with Brad Pitt.

So, maybe a few Hail Mary’s are in order. Check out the video below.
