The Lucasfilm Ltd. production, directed by Gareth Edwards, has all the hallmarks of a Star Wars film.
But it is actually a stand-alone spinoff.
Still, it has its place in the Star Wars universe. The film is set between “Episode III: Revenge of The Sith” and “Episode IV: A New Hope.”
The trailer premiered last night (Aug. 11) during the 2016 Rio Olympics, a fitting stage. The monumental clip aired during a monumental sports event.
“Rogue One” isn’t expected to depart from the Star Wars formula.
The rebels are pitted against the ever-present Empire in a universe filled with droids, strange aliens, desert planets, crisp gray uniforms and the all to familiar storm troopers.
Jones is joined in the cast by Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk.
James Earl Jones is also in the cast, so you know what that means–the return of Darth Vader, one of the most epic villains in movie history. It’s a shame he was killed off in the series.
The film will test the public’s appetite for Star Wars movies.
Last year’s “Star Wars the Force Awakens, Episode VII,” which continued the series, grossed $2 billion worldwide. It was an unqualified success, scoring the biggest domestic gross in film history.
The next movie in the series, Episode VIII, is expected to be released in 2017, followed by another stand-alone film in 2018.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will be released during the Christmas holiday season, Dec. 16.
Jones, 32, is a hot actress at the moment.
After appearing in only one film last year, she has three in post-production this year beside “Rogue One,” including the Ron Howard-directed “Inferno.”
