Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have ended their divorce battle, not with a bang, but an out-of-court settlement. Unanswered is what role, if any, an explosive video played showing Depp melting down in an abusive tirade against his ex-spouse.

The video was “leaked” and appeared on gossip site TMZ. Heard adamantly insisted that she did not leak it.

What is clear from the clip is that Heard recorded it on her phone without Depp’s knowledge. He flipped when he finally saw it, despite her efforts to conceal it from him.

That fact alone may have made it inadmissible in the divorce proceedings. But it seems to have served hits purpose.

The settlement of their divorce comes just one day before they were scheduled to appear for a hearing and less than a week after Heard was finally deposed in the case.

As part of the deal, Depp will reportedly pay Heard an estimated $7 million. In return, she lifted a restraining order against him for domestic abuse.

Despite all the animosity, the couple tried to end their relationship on a positive note.

The released the following statement:

“Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity. There will be no further public statements about this matter.”

The statement’s language was clearly designed to erase the image the Depp is a serial abuser. The statement also gave Heard an out, making clear that she wasn’t a gold digger.

The video was reportedly shot well before the May 21 incident in which Amber claims Johnny struck her,” according to TMZ.

Depp is captured slamming kitchen cabinet doors, throwing a glass and a wine bottle. The video ends abruptly when Depp realizes he’s being recorded and makes a grab for the phone. (See below)

They had been married for 15 months, before splitting in May. Heard filed for the divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
