Charli XCX, the UK singer and songwriter, flirted with a wardrobe malfunction during her show at the SoBe 21st birthday in Vegas. She shared the stage with Tinashe, a Kentucky R&B singer, best known for recurring appearances on the hit show “Two and a Half Men.”
SoBe, a beverage company that produces several varieties of tea, sports drinks and energy drinks, is known for using near topless women in its advertising campaign.
That theme apparently wasn’t lost on Charli, real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison. She put on an sexually charged show.
She owes her exotic look to a Scottish father and an Indian mother who grew up in Uganda.
She started performing and writing songs when she was 14. She built a fan base through MySpace and by performing at illegal warehouse raves in East London.
In 2010, Charli landed a recording deal with Asylum Records when she was 18. She gained popularity when she was featured on Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” which she wrote, and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.”
But Aitchison broke out in the UK with the 2014 single “Boom Clap.” The song was featured in the 2014 movie “The Fault in Our Stars,” starring Shailene Woodley and appeared on the soundtrack album.
Charli is less well known in the United States. “Boom Clap,” her best known song, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
But with performances like hers for SoBe, what happened in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas for very long.
