Dr. Strange, the new Marvel movie, is about the strangest superhero yet, a kind of anti-hero who gains his powers by mastering the occult. In fact Dr. Strange is also mystified by his own superpowers. But a new Disney featurette helps sort things out.

In the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the doctor, who toys with mind-bending magic and alternate dimensions.

The film co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.

Swinton, who plays “the Ancient One,” a Celtic mystic, who trains apprentices to become the next Sorcerer Supreme and becomes mentor to Dr. Strange.

“Dr. Strange, your work saved the lives of thousands,” she intones. “What if I told you that reality is one of many.”

Next, Cumberbatch provides some insight into his character.

“Dr. Strange is incredibly arrogant, brilliant, sort of extraordinary, and his need to control fates, to control destiny and particularly control death has brought him to the height of his profession as a neurosurgeon,” he says.

Strange is involved in a car crash that badly injures his hands and goes on a quest to find the treatment that will fix them.

Nothing works and he spends his last funds on a ticket to Nepal in search of a mystical cure.

Ejiofor’s character Karl Mordo, a former student of the Ancient One, introduces Strange to her mystical world.

“He finds the Ancient One, who is a sorceress supreme,” says Swinton.

“You wonder what I see in your future?” the Ancient One asks him. “Possibility.”

Disney and Marvel are also looking at the possibility of another huge blockbuster and possibly several more movies based on the character.

The movie will debut Nov. 4.
