Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, the subject of scurrilous divorce rumors ever since they married two years ago, apparently are calling it quits for real. They have been together for 10 years and have six children, three of which are biological.

“Brangelina” was one of Hollywood’s most storied relationships and for a time appeared enduring.

They started dating in 2005 on the heels of Pitt’s divorce from actress Jennifer Anniston after five years of marriage. Jolie had previously been married to actor Billy Bob Thorton.

Jolie, 41, apparently called it quits on the marriage.

It’s been confirmed that she filed for divorce Monday (Sept. 19) citing “irreconcilable differences,” a common cause of action in celebrity marriage breakups.

Ironically, they just celebrated their second wedding anniversary last month and only separated on Sept. 15, according to the legal filing.

The breakup looks like it could be bitter and hotly contested in court. Jolie is requesting sole physical custody of their six children. Pitt, 51, has been offered visitation rights.

In March 2002, Jolie adopted her first child, then seven-month-old Maddox Chivan from an orphanage in Cambodia. In 2005, she adopted then six-month-old Zahara Marley, from an orphanage in Ethiopia.

She gave birth to twins, Knox Léon, and Vivienne Marcheline, in 2008. Pitt also adopted the children and Jolie legally changed her last name to Jolie-Pitt.

Part of the reason for their split reportedly was a disagreement over parenting methods, according to gossip site TMZ.

Robert Offer, an attorney for Angelina, said in a statement released today (Sept. 20) that she decided to divorce “for the health of the family.”
